Rabbit Island news for January 2012

In January 2012, a light-footed clapper rail was spotted by Bolsa Chica Conservancy member Austin Parker on Rabbit Island. Rabbit Island is the vegetated island located on the east side of the walking trail at Bolsa Chica, in the Full Tidal Basin.  Rabbit Island can be seen on the Bolsa Chica Restoration Vicinity Map.  The island is maintained by a tidal channel that encircles it, minimizing the threat to birds of disturbance and predation.  Belding's Savannah sparrows nest in the coastal salt marsh vegetation on the island.

The rare plant coast woolly heads (Nemacaulis denudata) grows on the remaining sand dune habitat on the island, though the populations are threatened by encroachment by iceplant.  Intensive efforts to control the iceplant have been undertaken both before and after the restoration project, most recently with removal efforts led by the Bolsa Chica Conservancy in coordination with the California Department of Fish and Game. Since November 2011, the Conservancy has planned and provided over 1000 hours of volunteer time by Conservancy staff and volunteers, the Orange County Conservation Corps, Sunburst Academy, and corporate partners to continue restoration efforts on the island.  Control of large areas of iceplant through the application of herbicide was also performed by the State Lands Commission in late 2010, with funding provided by the US Fish & Wildlife Service (see photo below).
