2011 Maintenance Dredging

Maintenance dredging update:

Dredging of the Bolsa Chica Full Tidal Basin began on January 8, 2011.    As of March 22, dredging is roughly 85% complete and is scheduled to be completed by April 30.  Currently approximately 5,500 cubic meters of sand are being dredged each day and spread onto the beach south of the inlet.  The average rate for the length of the project has been 4,600 cubic meters per day.

The dredge is located in the Full Tidal Basin inlet and operates up to 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. In order to minimize noise and air pollution concerns, the dredge is powered by electricity rather than diesel fuel.

The sand dredged from the inlet is pumped through a flexible pipe out onto the beach to the south of the inlet. The wet sand flows to the surf zone and is distributed across the beach by earth moving equipment. Beach closures in the sand pumping area are limited to a 300-foot wide stretch of beach at the discharge point, within which access by the public is prohibited. The closed area will shift down the beach as the sand is placed and work moves to new areas. The sand has been cored and tested to confirm that it is composed of clean, beach-grade sand.

It is anticipated that the maintenance dredging will be completed by April 30, 2011.
